i40

Frigidaire Dishwasher

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Frigidaire i40 means the drain cycle took longer than the control expected.
Water did not leave the tub fast enough, the timer ran past its limit, and i40 latched.
The cause is almost always a partial drain restriction — slower than i20 (full block) but slower than the control allows.
The fix is the same: clean the filter, check the hose, run the disposer.

Affected Models

  • Frigidaire Gallery FGID series
  • Frigidaire Professional FPID series
  • Frigidaire FFID series
  • Frigidaire Crown FFCD series

Common Causes

  • Filter partially clogged but not fully blocked
  • Drain hose with a slight kink or sag
  • Disposer with food in it slowing the dishwasher's drain path
  • Air gap on the sink top partially restricted
  • Drain pump impeller worn and slower than new

How to Fix It

  1. Clean the filter.

    Pull the lower rack out.
Twist the cylindrical filter at the bottom of the tub counter-clockwise, lift it out, and rinse under hot water.
Lift the flat coarse screen as well.
    Reinstall.

  2. Run the disposer for 30 seconds.

Turn the kitchen disposer on with cold water running.
Anything sitting in the disposer slows everything that drains through it, including the dishwasher hose.

  3. Check the air gap.

If you have the small chrome cylinder on the sink, twist the cap off and lift the inner cover.
Clear any grease or food paste with a bottle brush.

  4. Inspect the drain hose.

Pull the dishwasher out a few inches.
Look at the corrugated hose at the back.
Sags collecting water, slight kinks, or crushed sections all slow drain.
Reroute so the hose has a smooth high loop above the disposer.

  5. Cancel and force-drain.

Hold the Cancel/Drain button for 3 seconds.
The dishwasher attempts a fresh drain.
If standing water remains in the tub, scoop it out manually with a measuring cup before another cycle.

  6. Test the drain pump.

If filters, hose, and air gap are all clean and i40 keeps appearing, the drain pump is worn.
Pumps are 40-90 USD and accessible from underneath after removing the toe-kick.
    An hour DIY job.
