Activation Required

Nook E-Reader

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

Nook 'Activation required' (sometimes 'Sign in to your B&N account' or 'Set up your Nook') shows on first power-on and after a factory reset.
The device needs to be linked to a Barnes & Noble account before you can buy or download books.
Activation is free; you don't need a credit card unless you want to make purchases.
Connect to WiFi, sign in, and you're done in two minutes.

Affected Models

  • Nook GlowLight 4, 4e, Plus, 3
  • Nook Tablet 7-inch and 10-inch
  • Refurbished or second-hand Nooks that were factory-reset
  • Older Nook Simple Touch and HD models

Common Causes

  • Brand-new Nook on first boot
  • Factory reset returned the device to out-of-box state
  • Account was deleted from a previous owner — needs new linkage
  • Account session expired permanently and can't be refreshed
  • Device was deactivated by B&N support after a security event

How to Fix It

  1. Connect to WiFi.

On the activation screen, tap 'Connect to WiFi' and pick your network.
    Enter the password.
Wait until the connection icon is solid.
Activation needs internet to verify the account with B&N's servers.

  2. Sign in to your B&N account.

Enter your B&N email and password.
If you don't have an account: tap 'Create account' and follow the prompts.
You can create the account without entering payment info — the device will activate, you just won't be able to buy until you add a card.

  3. Skip the credit card step if you don't want to buy.

On older Nooks, the activation flow asks for a credit card.
On newer Nook GlowLight models, this is now optional — look for 'Skip' or 'Set up later' on the payment screen.
You'll still be activated and able to use the device with free books, library books, and side-loaded content.

  4. Verify your email if asked.

First-time accounts may need email verification.
Check the inbox for the address you used.
Tap the verification link in the email (use your phone or PC; doesn't have to be the Nook itself).
The Nook polls until verification completes — usually within seconds.

  5. If activation fails, check the date and time.

An incorrect system clock can fail the security handshake B&N uses during activation.
Settings → Date & Time → set automatic.
If automatic isn't available (offline), set manually to within a few minutes of correct.
    Then retry activation.

  6. If the device says 'previously registered'.

If you bought the Nook second-hand and activation says it's still tied to another account, the previous owner has to deregister it from their nook.com account.
Until they do, you can't activate.
Contact the seller; if you can't reach them, B&N support can sometimes deregister with proof of ownership.
