Download Failed

Nook E-Reader

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

Nook shows 'Download failed' (also seen as 'Item could not be downloaded' or 'Failed to retrieve') when a book or magazine started downloading and didn't complete.
Most causes are network: the WiFi dropped mid-transfer, the file size hit a snag, or B&N's servers were briefly slow.
Retrying usually works.
If retrying doesn't, a sync, sign-out, or reboot generally clears it.

Affected Models

  • Nook GlowLight 4, 4e, Plus, 3
  • Nook Tablet 7-inch and 10-inch
  • Older Nook Simple Touch with downloadable content

Common Causes

  • WiFi dropped mid-download
  • File too large for available storage
  • Sync state mismatch — the library knows about the book but the device hasn't received the licence yet
  • DRM check failed temporarily
  • Magazine download (these are bigger and fail more often)
  • Account in a 'pending' state after a recent purchase

How to Fix It

  1. Tap Retry.

Most 'Download failed' messages have a Retry button right there.
    Tap it.
The Nook restarts the download from scratch.
This single step works for the majority of one-off failures — usually a WiFi blip or a brief B&N hiccup.

  2. Sync the library.

Library → menu (three dots) → Sync.
This forces the Nook to re-check what's purchased on your account and what's already on the device.
If the licence wasn't transferred properly the first time, a sync downloads it cleanly and the failed item appears as ready to read.

  3. Check storage.

    Settings → Storage.
If the device is nearly full, large books or magazines fail to download.
Delete books you've finished (Library → long-press a book → Remove from Device — keeps it in the cloud, just frees local space).

  4. Restart the Nook.

Hold the power button for 10 seconds until it powers off completely.
    Wait 30 seconds.
    Power on.
    Try the download again.
A clean boot resolves stuck DRM checks and orphaned download sessions.

  5. Sign out and sign back in.

Settings → Account → Sign Out → confirm.
Then sign back in with your B&N credentials.
This refreshes the device's licence cache.
Books you've already downloaded stay; the failed items become re-downloadable.

  6. Try a different network.

If retries keep failing on home WiFi, try a phone hotspot or a friend's WiFi.
If the download succeeds on the new network, your home connection is the issue.
Some routers block the specific port or protocol B&N uses for downloads — usually rare but does happen with strict business networks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I be charged again if I retry a failed download?

No.
The purchase is tied to your account, not to a specific download attempt.
You can re-download a purchased book as many times as needed at no extra cost.
The 'Download failed' error doesn't reverse a purchase — the book still shows in your library and counts as bought.
