Water Leaking

Electra Split AC

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Water dripping from an Electra indoor unit into the room means the condensation produced by the unit is not draining away properly. The most common cause is a blocked drain pipe. Switch off the AC immediately to prevent water damage to walls, ceilings, or electrical fittings, then clear the blockage.

Affected Models

  • Electra Avante Inverter
  • Electra Classic Inverter
  • Electra Alpha Series
  • Electra Split AC (all inverter models)
  • Electra 1 Ton / 1.5 Ton / 2 Ton Inverter

Common Causes

  • Condensate drain pipe blocked with algae, mould, or debris — most common cause
  • Drain pan cracked or deformed, allowing water to bypass the drain outlet
  • Air filters heavily blocked, causing the evaporator coil to ice up and then drip when the ice melts
  • Drain pipe incorrectly installed with an upward section preventing free flow
  • Drain pump failed — water accumulates in the pan
  • Very high humidity causing more condensation than normal during heavy use

How to Fix It

  1. Switch off the AC immediately.

Water dripping inside is not just a nuisance — it can cause mould growth in walls and ceiling, damage plaster, and reach electrical fittings. Do not continue using the AC until the leak is fixed.

  2. Check and clean the air filters.

Remove the front panel and slide out the filters. If they are heavily clogged, the evaporator coil can ice up — the ice then melts faster than the drain can handle, causing overflow. Clean the filters and allow any ice to defrost (run fan-only mode for an hour if ice is present).

  3. Clear the condensate drain pipe.

Follow the drain pipe from the indoor unit to its exit point. Use a wet/dry vacuum at the exit end to suck out the blockage. If you can access the drain tray, pour a cup of water in slowly — if it does not drain away, the pipe is blocked.

  4. Clean the drain tray.

Wipe the plastic tray inside the unit with a cloth dampened with diluted bleach. Algae and slime in the tray eventually block the drain outlet — cleaning the tray is as important as clearing the pipe.

  5. Restart and monitor for leaking.

Once the drain is clear, restart the AC and watch for 15 minutes. If water still drips, the drain pipe may have an upward section, the drain pan may be cracked, or the drain pump has failed — call a technician.

Frequently Asked Questions

How quickly can a leaking AC cause damage?

It depends on the volume of water and what it is dripping onto. A slow drip onto a painted ceiling can cause visible staining within hours. A drain pan that overflows can release significant water quickly. Always switch off and fix the issue the same day — do not leave a leaking AC running overnight.

How do I prevent the Electra AC from leaking water again?

Monthly drain maintenance during the cooling season is the most reliable prevention. Pour one tablespoon of household bleach diluted in half a cup of water into the drain tray access point every month — this prevents algae from growing into a blockage. Also clean the air filters every 2–4 weeks during heavy use.
