E3

Lumenis Medical Laser

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

Error E3 on a Lumenis laser means the CPU or embedded control board inside the device has detected a malfunction. This is the main circuit board that runs the entire system. A power cycle may clear a transient E3 caused by a software lockup; if it returns, the board requires inspection or replacement by an authorised Lumenis engineer.

Affected Models

  • Lumenis LightSheer DUET
  • Lumenis LightSheer ET
  • Lumenis AcuPulse CO2 Laser
  • Lumenis UltraPulse
  • Lumenis M22 IPL Platform

Common Causes

  • Control board component failure — processor, memory, or peripheral circuit fault
  • Software or firmware corruption causing the board self-test to fail
  • Power supply delivering incorrect voltage to the control board
  • Overheating of the control board — internal airflow or cooling fan issue
  • Loose internal cable connecting the control board to another sub-system

How to Fix It

  1. Power the device off using the key switch, wait 60 seconds, and power back on.

If E3 was caused by a transient firmware lockup or a brief power fluctuation, a full power cycle may clear it. Wait the full 60 seconds — a quick off/on does not allow the board to reset fully.

  2. Check that the device is plugged directly into a stable power outlet.

Unstable or noisy mains power can cause control board errors. Do not use an extension cord or power strip — plug directly into a wall outlet on a dedicated circuit.

  3. If E3 returns after a power cycle, do not continue restarting.

Repeated restarts on a failing board can cause additional component damage. Note the exact sequence of events — when E3 appeared, whether the system reached ready state first, and any unusual sounds or smells before shutdown. This information helps the service engineer diagnose the fault faster.

  4. Contact Lumenis service or your authorised service partner.

Provide the device model number, serial number, and a description of when E3 appeared. Lumenis service can advise whether the board needs firmware reflash, re-seating of connectors, or full replacement.

When to Call a Professional

E3 requires an authorised Lumenis service engineer. Do not attempt to open the device or inspect the control board — the interior of a medical laser contains high-voltage capacitors that remain charged after power off. Contact Lumenis service or an authorised biomedical repair company.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a voltage spike cause Lumenis E3?

Yes — a mains voltage spike or momentary power interruption can cause the control board to enter a fault state, displaying E3. If E3 appeared immediately after a power event (power cut, breaker trip, lightning storm nearby), a power cycle often resolves it. If E3 appears during normal operation with no power event, the board has a genuine fault.

Is E3 covered under Lumenis warranty?

Control board failures within the warranty period are typically covered. Contact Lumenis or your distributor with the device serial number to confirm warranty status before authorising any paid repair.
