Not Reading
OrCam Assistive Vision Device
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
If your OrCam MyEye is not reading text when you point it at a page or screen, the most common causes are insufficient lighting, holding the device at the wrong angle, the text being too small or blurry, or the device needing a software update.
Affected Models
- OrCam MyEye 2
- OrCam MyEye 3
- OrCam MyEye Pro
Common Causes
- Lighting is too dim — OrCam needs reasonable light to capture and process text
- Device is pointing at too steep an angle to the text (should be roughly perpendicular)
- Text is too small, faded, or low contrast
- Device has a pending firmware update that is affecting OCR performance
- Camera lens is dirty or smudged
How to Fix It
-
Improve the lighting
Move to a well-lit area or turn on a lamp. OrCam's camera performs best in normal indoor lighting or natural daylight. Dim candlelight or deep shadow will reduce accuracy significantly.
-
Hold the device closer and more perpendicular
Hold the OrCam 20–40 cm from the text and make sure it is facing the text directly (not at a sharp angle). The camera field of view is narrow — small adjustments in angle make a big difference.
-
Clean the camera lens
Use a soft microfibre cloth to gently wipe the small camera lens on the OrCam device. Fingerprints or smudges significantly reduce image quality.
-
Check for a firmware update
Connect the OrCam to WiFi and use the OrCam Connect app to check for and install any available updates. Firmware updates often include OCR improvements.
-
Try a high-contrast document
Test with a printed newspaper or a book with clear, black text on white paper. If it reads those correctly but not other materials, the problem is the text quality rather than the device.
When to Call a Professional
No — most reading issues are resolved by adjusting technique or environment.
OrCam MyEye Not Reading — Troubleshooting Guide
The OrCam MyEye uses a camera and AI to capture and read text aloud. When it stops working correctly, the issue is almost always environmental — lighting, angle, lens cleanliness, or text quality — rather than a hardware fault.
The Two Most Common Fixes
- More light — move to a brighter area
- Better angle — hold the device directly facing the text, 20–40 cm away
These two adjustments resolve the majority of reading failures.
When to Contact OrCam Support
If the device reads nothing even in good light with clean print at the correct angle, and a firmware update does not help, contact OrCam’s dedicated support line. OrCam provides comprehensive support for users with visual impairments, including phone and video assistance.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can OrCam read handwriting?
OrCam MyEye 3 and Pro have improved handwriting recognition, but performance varies with handwriting style and clarity. Neat, dark handwriting on white paper gives the best results. Very cursive or messy handwriting may not be read reliably.
Can OrCam read from a computer or phone screen?
Yes — OrCam can read text from digital screens. Reduce screen glare by adjusting the screen brightness and angle, and try to minimise reflections.
