WiFi Error
OrCam Assistive Vision Device
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
An OrCam WiFi error means the device cannot connect to your home wireless network. The OrCam works offline for core functions (reading text, recognising faces, identifying products), but WiFi is needed for software updates and some cloud features.
Affected Models
- OrCam MyEye 2
- OrCam MyEye 3
- OrCam MyEye Pro
Common Causes
- WiFi password has changed and the device is still trying the old password
- Router has been replaced and the new network name (SSID) differs
- OrCam is out of WiFi range
- Router is using a 5 GHz-only band — OrCam only connects to 2.4 GHz networks
- Router firewall is blocking the OrCam's connection
How to Fix It
-
Open the OrCam Connect app
The OrCam Connect app on your smartphone is used to manage WiFi settings. Open it and go to Device Settings > WiFi.
-
Forget and re-add the network
Remove the current WiFi network from the OrCam's saved networks and re-add it with the current, correct password.
-
Ensure you are connecting to a 2.4 GHz network
OrCam MyEye devices connect to 2.4 GHz WiFi only. If your router broadcasts only 5 GHz, or if 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz share the same network name, you may need to enable a dedicated 2.4 GHz band. Check your router settings.
-
Move closer to the router
When initially connecting, stand within a few metres of your router to ensure good signal during the setup process.
-
Restart the router
Unplug your router for 30 seconds and reconnect. Then try reconnecting the OrCam.
When to Call a Professional
No — WiFi reconnection is done through the OrCam Connect app.
OrCam WiFi Connection Problems
WiFi connectivity is not essential for day-to-day OrCam use, but it is needed for receiving software updates that improve reading accuracy and add new features.
The 2.4 GHz Requirement
This is the most commonly overlooked issue. Many modern routers broadcast both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands — sometimes with the same network name. If your phone connects to 5 GHz automatically and you try to point OrCam at the same network, it may be attempting (and failing) to connect to the 5 GHz band.
Solution: Log into your router and confirm a 2.4 GHz band is available, then connect OrCam specifically to that band.
When WiFi Matters Most
- Installing firmware updates with OCR improvements
- Syncing usage data with the OrCam cloud (for professional users)
- Setting up new features via the OrCam Connect app
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the OrCam work without WiFi?
Yes — the core functions of OrCam MyEye (reading text, recognising faces and products) work fully offline. WiFi is only needed for firmware updates and some optional cloud-based features.
My router has both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz with the same name. How do I connect OrCam?
You need to either temporarily rename the 2.4 GHz band to something different (e.g., 'MyWiFi_2.4') so you can specifically connect the OrCam to it, or configure your router to show them as separate networks. Your internet provider or router manual can help with this.
