Your Device Needs to Restart
TomTom GPS Navigation Device
Severity: ModerateWhat it means
TomTom 'Your device needs to restart' — or a unit that keeps rebooting on its own, freezes on the TomTom logo, or loops at startup — usually points to a software glitch, a half-finished update, low storage, or a battery too flat to sustain a boot.
A forced restart fixes most one-off cases.
A loop that won't break usually needs the software reinstalled through MyDrive Connect.
Affected Models
- TomTom GO, GO Discover, GO Supreme, GO Essential
- TomTom Start and Via series
- TomTom Rider
- Older TomTom units after an interrupted update
Common Causes
- A temporary software hang
- An interrupted firmware or map update that left the device in a bad state
- Storage so full there's no room for the device to operate
- Battery too low to complete a boot
- Failing internal memory (rare)
How to Fix It
-
Do a forced restart.
Press and hold the power button for about 20 seconds — until you hear the drum sound or the TomTom logo appears, depending on the model.
This is the standard TomTom soft reset and it clears most stuck states without losing your data. -
Charge it first if the battery's low.
A device that can't hold enough charge to finish booting will restart over and over.
Put it on a mains charger for an hour or two, then try the forced restart. -
Free up space.
If storage is nearly full, the device can misbehave on startup.
Connect it to MyDrive Connect and remove an unused map region or old trips to give it breathing room. -
Reinstall the software through MyDrive Connect.
If it's stuck in a boot loop, plug it into a computer running MyDrive Connect.
It detects the problem and offers to reinstall the device application and the map.
This fixes the great majority of loops. -
Factory reset as a last resort.
On the device, Settings > Reset Device — or through MyDrive Connect.
It wipes the unit back to defaults, so back up favourites and POIs first if it still lets you.
If it still loops after a reset and reinstall, the hardware has failed — contact TomTom.
