MyDrive Connect Update Failed
TomTom GPS Navigation Device
Severity: ModerateWhat it means
'MyDrive Connect couldn't update your device' — or an update that stalls, errors, or won't finish — almost always comes down to the computer connection: a flaky USB cable or port, antivirus or firewall blocking MyDrive Connect, not enough free space on the device, or the device dropping off partway through.
The TomTom itself is usually fine; it's the link to the computer that's the problem.
Affected Models
- TomTom GO, GO Discover, GO Supreme, GO Essential
- TomTom Start and Via series
- TomTom Rider
- Any TomTom updated by cable through MyDrive Connect
Common Causes
- USB cable damaged, or a hub / extension lead between the device and the computer
- USB port not supplying enough power, so the device disconnects mid-update
- Antivirus or firewall blocking MyDrive Connect's downloads
- Not enough free space on the device for the update
- MyDrive Connect itself out of date
- Computer going to sleep during a long download
How to Fix It
-
Use the supplied cable, straight into the computer.
No hubs, no extension leads, and a rear USB port on a desktop rather than a front one if you can.
A poor connection is the single biggest cause of failed TomTom updates. -
Free up space on the device first.
If the update needs more room than the device has, it fails partway.
Remove an unused map region or old trips first — see our 'Memory full' fix — then retry the update. -
Update or reinstall MyDrive Connect.
Download the latest version from TomTom.
If it's misbehaving, uninstall it, restart the computer, and install it fresh — a clean install clears a lot of update gremlins. -
Allow it through your security software.
Add MyDrive Connect (and its background helper) to the exceptions list in your antivirus and firewall.
Overzealous security software blocks the download silently, so the update just hangs with no obvious reason. -
Stop the computer going to sleep.
Change the power settings so the computer and its USB ports stay awake during a big map download — these can take a while on a slow connection, and a sleeping PC kills the transfer.
-
Retry from a clean start.
Disconnect the device, close MyDrive Connect, reopen it, reconnect, and let it pick up where it left off.
Plenty of half-failed updates complete fine on a clean second attempt.
