WAN LED Red

Asus Router

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Asus router shows the WAN LED red (or amber on some models) when the WAN port — the connection from your modem — has no internet.
Cause is usually the modem itself, the cable between modem and router, or the ISP service.
The router itself is fine; it just cannot find an upstream connection.

Affected Models

  • Asus RT-AX series
  • Asus ROG Rapture series
  • Asus ZenWiFi mesh systems
  • Asus RT-AC series

Common Causes

  • Modem powered off or in a fault state
  • Ethernet cable between modem and router unplugged
  • Cable damaged or kinked
  • ISP service outage
  • ISP provisioning issue (after package change)
  • PPPoE or static IP credentials in the router are wrong

How to Fix It

  1. Restart the modem.

Unplug the modem for 60 seconds, then plug back in.
Wait 2-3 minutes for the modem to fully boot.
Modems that have been online for weeks accumulate state issues — restart resolves many of them.

  2. Restart the router.

After the modem is back, unplug the router for 30 seconds, then plug back in.
Wait 1-2 minutes for full boot.
The WAN LED should turn green or blue once the connection is established.

  3. Check the ethernet cable.

Confirm the cable from modem to router is fully seated at both ends.
Both connectors should click into place.
Inspect the cable for kinks, cuts, or signs of pet damage.
Try a known-good ethernet cable as a swap test.

  4. Try a different WAN port (some models).

Some Asus routers allow any LAN port to be reconfigured as WAN.
If you suspect the WAN port itself is bad, repurpose a LAN port via the router admin (192.168.1.1 → WAN settings).
This is a workaround for hardware faults on the original WAN port.

  5. Check ISP status.

Visit your ISP's status page from your phone (using mobile data, not WiFi).
If they show a known outage, no router fix will help.
Wait for the ISP to resolve.

  6. Verify PPPoE credentials.

If your ISP requires PPPoE login, check the username and password in the router's WAN settings.
Wrong credentials show up as WAN red.
ISP support can confirm what they should be.

  7. Contact your ISP.

If the modem is online but the router still shows WAN red after restarts, call the ISP.
They can check provisioning, IP assignment, and remotely test your line.
Many issues are on their side and trivially fixed with a phone call.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does WAN sometimes turn red after a power cut?

After power restoration, the modem usually boots faster than the router.
If the router boots first and the modem is not yet ready, WAN LED briefly shows red.
Most routers retry automatically within a few minutes.
If WAN stays red after 5 minutes, manual restart of both fixes it.
