WiFi LED Off

Asus Router

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

Asus router with WiFi LED off means the wireless radio is disabled.
Cause is usually a hardware WiFi toggle on the back of the router, a scheduled WiFi-off rule in the admin panel, or the radio failing.
Most cases clear by checking the WiFi switch and reviewing the schedule.
Wired ethernet from LAN ports still works regardless of WiFi state.

Affected Models

  • Asus RT-AX series
  • Asus ROG Rapture series
  • Asus ZenWiFi mesh systems
  • Asus RT-AC series

Common Causes

  • Hardware WiFi toggle switched off
  • Scheduled WiFi-off rule active in the admin
  • Both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz disabled in admin
  • Recent firmware update reset radio settings
  • Radio hardware failed
  • Router in temporary thermal throttle

How to Fix It

  1. Check the hardware WiFi switch.

Some Asus routers have a physical WiFi on/off switch on the back or side.
Confirm it is in the on position.
The switch is small and easy to bump accidentally during dusting or cable management.

  2. Open the router admin.

From a wired computer, open 192.168.1.1 in a browser.
Wireless settings → confirm both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz are enabled.
    Apply changes.

  3. Check WiFi schedule.

Many Asus routers support scheduled WiFi-off windows for kids' bedtime.
    Wireless → Professional → Schedule.
If a schedule is active, it overrides manual WiFi enable.
    Disable or adjust the schedule.

  4. Restart the router.

Unplug for 30 seconds, plug back in.
The router boots fresh and applies wireless settings.
Many WiFi LED off cases clear with a clean restart.

  5. Reset to factory if config corrupted.

If admin settings look right but WiFi still does not start, configuration may be corrupted.
Hold the reset button for 10-15 seconds until the LED flashes.
    Re-run setup wizard.
This wipes saved settings — reconfigure from scratch.

  6. Update firmware.

Asus admin → Firmware Upgrade → check for updates.
    Apply pending firmware.
Newer firmware fixes some radio bugs.
    Restart after update.

  7. Check temperature.

If the router runs very hot, it may throttle the radio.
Place in a well-ventilated location, away from heat sources.
Routers in enclosed cabinets without airflow often have intermittent WiFi after long uptime.

  8. Replace if hardware failed.

If WiFi stays off after factory reset and firmware update, the radio hardware has failed.
Within warranty, Asus replaces the unit.
Out-of-warranty, the LAN ports still work — you can use the router as a wired-only switch until replacement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I disable just one band?

Yes — Asus admin lets you toggle 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz independently.
Useful if 5 GHz is interfering with another network or if you want to force devices onto one band.
The WiFi LED is typically on if either band is active.
