Err 1

Dolphin Robotic Pool Cleaner

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Dolphin Err 1 means the impeller motor — the one that drives water suction — failed or stalled.
The power supply detected wrong current and shut the unit off to protect the motor.
Cause is usually debris jammed in the impeller, a worn impeller seal, or a motor that has aged out.
Most Err 1 cases clear after clearing visible debris from the suction area.

Affected Models

  • Dolphin Premier
  • Dolphin Sigma
  • Dolphin Nautilus CC Plus
  • Dolphin M400
  • Dolphin M600
  • Dolphin Active 30i

Common Causes

  • Leaves, hair, or debris jammed in the impeller
  • Filter cartridge blocked, restricting flow
  • Impeller blade damaged after running over a sharp object
  • Motor seal failed and water reached the windings
  • Cable tangled or kinked, twisting the unit
  • Motor at end of life (typical Dolphin motor lasts 4-7 years)

How to Fix It

  1. Power off and lift out.

Disconnect the power supply from the wall.
Lift the cleaner out of the pool by the handle, not by the cable.
Let it drain over the pool for a minute.

  2. Remove and clean filters.

    Open the filter compartment.
    Pull the cartridges or panels.
    Hose them off thoroughly.
Restricted filters force the impeller to work harder and trigger Err 1.
Replace cartridges every 2-3 years even with cleaning.

  3. Inspect the impeller area.

Look up into the suction inlet from the bottom of the cleaner.
Hair, leaves, or pine needles wrap around the impeller and stop it.
Use long tweezers or a hooked wire to clear visible debris.

  4. Spin the impeller by hand.

With power off, the impeller should rotate freely with light resistance from the seal.
Stiff or grinding rotation = bearing failure.
Visible debris wrapped around the shaft = clear it before powering back on.

  5. Inspect for water in the motor.

If you hear water sloshing inside the motor housing or see water beads inside the clear sections, the motor seal has failed.
    Continued use destroys the motor.
Maytronics service is the only proper fix — DIY motor swap is rarely viable.

  6. Power back on and test.

Plug the power supply back in.
Place the cleaner in shallow water (not the pool).
    Press start.
The impeller should hum and water should jet from the outlet.
No flow = motor or impeller still faulty.

  7. Contact Maytronics for service.

If Err 1 persists after clearing debris, contact Maytronics support.
Out-of-warranty motor replacements are 200-400 USD.
For cleaners older than 6 years, a new cleaner often makes more sense.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I keep running with Err 1 by ignoring it?

No — the power supply locks out until reset.
Repeatedly powering through Err 1 risks burning out a motor that might be repairable for less.
Clear debris first, then attempt restart.
