Err 2

Dolphin Robotic Pool Cleaner

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Dolphin Err 2 means the drive motor failed or stalled.
The drive motor turns the tracks that move the cleaner across the pool floor and walls.
If it cannot rotate at expected speed, the power supply posts Err 2.
Cause is almost always mechanical: hair or fibres wrapped around the drive shaft, a track that came off, or a track tensioner that failed.

Affected Models

  • Dolphin Premier
  • Dolphin Sigma
  • Dolphin Nautilus CC Plus
  • Dolphin M400
  • Dolphin M600
  • Dolphin Active 30i

Common Causes

  • Hair, fibres, or string wrapped around the drive axle
  • Track came off the drive wheel
  • Track stretched and slipping over the drive wheel
  • Drive motor seal failed, water in motor
  • Bearings worn after years of service
  • Drive belt internal to the gearbox stripped

How to Fix It

  1. Power off and lift out.

    Disconnect the power supply.
Lift the cleaner by the handle.
Drain over the pool for a minute.

  2. Inspect the tracks.

    Flip the cleaner over.
    Look at both tracks.
A track that came off the drive wheel is the most common Err 2 cause.
Reseat the track over the wheel — stretch it gently with two thumbs and pop it back into place.

  3. Pull off the tracks completely.

Tracks slide off the drive wheels with a firm pull.
Once off, you can see the drive shaft clearly.
Look for hair or fibres wrapped tightly around the shaft — very common after the cleaner has been in pools shared with long-haired bathers.

  4. Clear debris from the shaft.

Use sharp scissors to cut through the wrapped material — do not pull, that can damage the seal.
Once cut, unwind and remove every piece.
Wipe the shaft with a clean cloth before reassembling.

  5. Check track tension.

Pull the track between drive and idler wheels — about 1 cm of give is normal.
Loose track that slides off easily = stretched = needs replacement.
Genuine Maytronics tracks are 30-80 USD per pair.

  6. Test the drive motor.

    Reassemble the tracks.
Place the cleaner on a smooth surface (not in the pool).
    Power on.
    Tracks should rotate.
One side fails to turn = drive motor on that side has failed; both sides fail = harness or power supply issue.

  7. Contact Maytronics for motor service.

If hair is cleared and tracks are good but Err 2 persists, the drive motor has failed.
Out-of-warranty drive motor replacement is 150-300 USD.
This is generally not a DIY repair — the motor sits inside a sealed housing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does hair cause so many Err 2 cases?

The drive shaft passes through a small seal at the housing.
Hair wraps around it, creates friction that the motor cannot overcome, and Err 2 trips.
If your pool sees long-haired swimmers, plan to inspect the shaft every 2-3 weeks.
