Inspect Cell

Hayward Salt Chlorine Generator

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

Hayward AquaRite shows Inspect Cell after 500 hours of cell run-time as a maintenance reminder.
It is not a fault — the cell is still working.
The reminder asks you to physically check the cell for scale, debris, and worn plates so you can clean before performance drops.
Cleaning the cell and resetting the timer makes the warning disappear.

Affected Models

  • Hayward AquaRite
  • Hayward AquaRite Pro
  • Hayward AquaRite S3
  • Hayward T-Cell-3
  • Hayward T-Cell-9
  • Hayward T-Cell-15

Common Causes

  • Cell run-time crossed the 500-hour reminder threshold
  • Counter never reset after the previous inspection
  • Recent firmware update reset the schedule
  • Owner skipped a previous reminder and the counter rolled over

How to Fix It

  1. Power off at the breaker.

Switch off the dedicated breaker for the salt system.
Wait until the pump stops before unscrewing the cell unions.

  2. Remove the cell.

Unscrew the unions on either side of the cell.
Lift the cell out of the plumbing.
Bring it to a flat work area with a garden hose nearby.

  3. Inspect the plates.

    Look down the cell.
Plates should appear bright with a slight metallic sheen.
White or grey scale buildup between plates = needs cleaning.
Heavy black coating or worn-thin plates = end of cell life.

  4. Rinse with the hose first.

Spray the cell with a garden hose at moderate pressure.
    Loose debris washes out.
Some scale is mechanically removed too.
If the cell looks clean after a hose rinse, you may not need an acid bath.

  5. Acid wash if needed.

Mix muriatic acid 1:4 with water (always acid into water, never the reverse) in a clean bucket.
Insert the cell into the bucket so plates are submerged for 5-15 minutes.
    Bubbles indicate scale is dissolving.
    Stop when bubbling slows.
    Rinse thoroughly with the hose.

  6. Check the flow switch.

While you have the cell out, look at the flow switch in the same plumbing run.
    Wipe the paddle clean.
A debris-clogged flow switch can cause No Flow errors that the salt system mistakes for cell problems.

  7. Reinstall and reset the timer.

Reinstall the cell with new union o-rings if the old ones look flattened.
    Restore power.
To reset the inspect-cell counter, switch the unit to Off then back to Auto.
On Pro models, the menu has a Reset Cell Counter option.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should a Hayward salt cell last?

Most Hayward cells last 5-7 years with regular cleaning, less in hard-water areas or pools running high salt.
If the cell is older than 5 years AND showing repeated warnings, replacement (T-Cell-15 is 500-800 USD) is more economical than further cleaning.
