Drive Error

Pentair Pool Pump

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Pentair IntelliFlo shows Drive Error when the variable-speed drive electronics detected an internal fault — typically over-voltage, over-current, or a temperature condition inside the drive itself.
The pump stops to protect the electronics.
Cause ranges from a hot equipment pad in summer to genuine drive failure after years of service.

Affected Models

  • Pentair IntelliFlo VS
  • Pentair IntelliFlo VSF
  • Pentair IntelliFlo i1
  • Pentair IntelliFlo i2
  • Pentair IntelliFlo3 VSF

Common Causes

  • Drive overheated — equipment pad in direct summer sun
  • Voltage spike from a lightning strike or utility event
  • Loose or corroded power connection at the drive terminal
  • Internal capacitor failed after 5+ years of service
  • Motor windings degraded and pulling abnormal current
  • Recent firmware update with a corrupted state

How to Fix It

  1. Power off at the breaker.

    Switch off the dedicated breaker.
Wait 5 minutes for the drive capacitors to discharge before opening any cover.
IntelliFlo capacitors hold lethal voltage immediately after shutdown.

  2. Let the drive cool.

If the equipment pad is in direct sun and Drive Error appears in the afternoon, the drive is overheating.
Wait until evening, restart, and observe.
Pumps that work fine at night but fail at noon need shading or relocation.

  3. Inspect power terminals.

Open the front cover (after the cool-down).
Look at the line and motor terminals on the drive.
Discoloration, melted plastic, or loose nuts indicate a bad connection — fix before any further testing.

  4. Check the equipment-pad ventilation.

    IntelliFlo drives need airflow.
Trim back any plants growing against the pump.
Clear leaves from the cooling fins on the back of the drive.
A small awning over the pad reduces direct sun without restricting airflow.

  5. Test motor resistance.

With the pump fully de-energised, disconnect motor leads from the drive.
Measure resistance between each pair — readings should be similar within 10%.
One winding way off = motor partially shorted = replacement needed.

  6. Cycle power and try again.

    Restore the breaker.
Some Drive Errors clear after a single power cycle following a transient event (lightning, utility blip).
If Drive Error returns immediately, the drive itself has failed.

  7. Schedule service for repeat failures.

If the drive faults regardless of temperature and voltage, the electronics need professional diagnosis.
IntelliFlo drives can be replaced as a unit (400-800 USD) or rebuilt by specialty pool service shops.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my warranty still good after a lightning hit?

Most Pentair warranties exclude lightning and surge damage explicitly.
Whole-pool surge protection (60-150 USD installed) is cheap insurance for a 1500-USD-plus pump.
If you live in a thunderstorm-prone area, install one before replacing a damaged drive.
