Stall

Pentair Pool Pump

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Pentair IntelliFlo Stall means the drive commanded the motor to spin but the rotor did not move — or moved well below expected speed.
The drive cuts power to protect the windings.
Causes split between mechanical (debris in the impeller, rusted shaft) and electrical (drive issue or motor winding fault).
Mechanical causes are most common after a long off-season.

Affected Models

  • Pentair IntelliFlo VS
  • Pentair IntelliFlo VSF
  • Pentair IntelliFlo i1
  • Pentair IntelliFlo i2
  • Pentair IntelliFlo3 VSF

Common Causes

  • Debris jammed in the impeller (usually after a storm)
  • Pump shaft rusted from sitting empty over winter
  • Pump basket overfull and leaves wedging into the impeller
  • Motor bearing failed and seized
  • Drive command issue — rare, usually after a firmware update
  • Capacitor in single-speed startup circuit failed (legacy installs)

How to Fix It

  1. Power off at the breaker.

    Switch off the dedicated breaker.
Wait 5 minutes for capacitors to discharge.
Any work on the impeller area must be done with the pump fully de-energised.

  2. Empty and inspect the strainer basket.

Open the lid on the strainer basket.
    Empty leaves and debris.
Look down into the impeller eye — if leaves are visible there, fish them out gently with a hooked wire.

  3. Try to spin the impeller by hand.

From the strainer basket, you can reach the impeller eye on most IntelliFlo models.
Try to turn it — should rotate freely with no binding.
Stiff = debris wedged or shaft seized.

  4. Open the volute if needed.

If debris is visible but you cannot remove it from above, the volute (the body holding the impeller) needs to come off.
Six bolts hold the front of the pump together.
Lift the volute off, clean everything, and reassemble with the o-ring lubricated.

  5. Free a rusted shaft.

If the pump sat empty over winter, the shaft can rust to the impeller.
Penetrating oil at the back of the motor and gentle persuasion with a strap wrench usually frees it.
Avoid hammering — that damages the motor bearings.

  6. Test motor resistance.

With the pump fully off and the motor leads disconnected from the drive, measure resistance between motor windings.
Out-of-range readings = motor failed internally.
Genuine Pentair motors are 200-500 USD.

  7. Restore power and observe.

Reseal the volute, prime the pump, restore power.
The drive ramps up — listen for smooth acceleration without grinding.
Stall returning immediately = mechanical issue still present.
Stall after 5+ minutes of running = drive or motor at end of life.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Stall happen after winter every year?

Pumps stored with water in them grow scale.
Pumps stored fully drained get rust on the shaft.
The right answer is to drain the pump and run it dry for a few seconds before storage to coat the shaft, then keep it covered.
Most owners skip these steps and pay for it in the spring.
