Battery Test Failed

CyberPower UPS

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

A Battery Test Failed result on a CyberPower UPS means the UPS ran its automatic self-test — briefly switching to battery to verify it can supply power — and the battery could not maintain adequate output. This is an early warning before the Replace Battery indicator lights up. The battery is weakening and should be replaced soon.

Affected Models

  • CyberPower CP series with LCD display
  • CyberPower BR series
  • CyberPower OL series
  • Any CyberPower model with automatic self-test function

Common Causes

  • Battery capacity has degraded and cannot sustain the load during the test
  • Battery discharged too deeply during a recent power outage and not yet fully recovered
  • Battery internal resistance too high due to age or temperature damage
  • A loose battery connector causing intermittent contact during the test

How to Fix It

  1. Allow the UPS to charge fully for 24 hours on mains power, then manually trigger a new self-test. On most CyberPower models, press and hold the test button for 3 seconds.

If the battery was recently deeply discharged (during a long power cut), it may need a full charge cycle before passing the test. A newly installed battery should pass immediately.

  2. Check the battery connector inside the unit is fully seated. Open the battery compartment and press the connector firmly into place.

A loose connector can cause a voltage drop during the test load, triggering a false failure. Always disconnect from mains before opening the battery compartment.

  3. If the test continues to fail after a full charge and the battery is more than 3 years old, order a replacement battery. A failed self-test is a strong indicator the battery will not perform during a real power cut.

Do not wait for the Replace Battery indicator — a battery that fails the self-test is already unreliable. Order the replacement before the next real power outage.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often does CyberPower UPS run a self-test?

Most CyberPower models run an automatic self-test every 14 days by default. You can also trigger a manual test at any time by pressing the test button. The test lasts about 10 seconds and causes the unit to beep once.
