PF
GE Refrigerator
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
GE shows PF when the fridge has been without power long enough to log a fault and now power has returned.
It is a notice, not a hardware fault — the fridge is running normally again.
Hold the appropriate button for 3 seconds (the exact button varies by model — usually Filter Reset, OK, or the dispenser door) to acknowledge the alert and clear the display.
Food safety is the more important question after a PF, not the code itself.
Affected Models
- GE Profile bottom-freezer
- GE Profile French-door
- GE Cafe French-door
- GE Monogram side-by-side
- GE side-by-side with external dispenser
Common Causes
- Real power outage from the utility
- Tripped breaker or GFCI on the fridge circuit
- Loose plug at the outlet
- Brief power dip from a major appliance starting on the same circuit
- Recent service work where the fridge was unplugged
How to Fix It
-
Acknowledge the PF alert.
On most GE models, hold the Filter Reset button for 3 seconds.
On dispenser models, the OK button under the screen does it.
The PF clears and normal temperature display returns. -
Check food safety.
Open the freezer.
If a thermometer reads above 40°F, or ice cream is fully soft, frozen food may have thawed and refrozen — discard meat, dairy, and leftovers to be safe.
If the freezer was below 40°F throughout, food is fine. -
Confirm the outlet is solid.
Pull the fridge out an inch.
Verify the plug is fully seated.
Bent prongs, melted plastic, or a loose-fitting outlet all cause repeated brief power losses that show as recurring PF. -
Test the outlet under load.
Plug a lamp into the same outlet.
If the lamp flickers when the compressor kicks on (you will hear the click and hum from the back), the outlet or the breaker is borderline.
An electrician can replace either for under 100 USD. -
Skip the GFCI for refrigerators.
GFCI breakers are not required on dedicated fridge circuits in most jurisdictions and they nuisance-trip during compressor starts.
If the fridge is on a GFCI, that is likely the cause of repeated PFs.
Move the fridge to a non-GFCI circuit if code allows. -
Look for repeating patterns.
If PF appears every few days at the same time of day, look for what else turns on at that hour — A/C, dryer, well pump.
Heavy starting loads on a shared circuit can dip voltage enough to trip the fridge's brownout protection.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to clear the code or will it clear itself?
It does not clear on its own — the alert stays until acknowledged.
This is by design so you do not miss it after a long outage while you were away from home.
How long can food stay safe with the door closed?
A full freezer holds for about 48 hours unopened, half-full for 24 hours.
A fridge holds for about 4 hours.
Open the door as little as possible during an outage to extend those numbers.
