Error 3

iRobot Robot Vacuum

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

Roomba Error 3 means the right side drive wheel is stuck. The wheel may have hair wrapped around the axle, debris jammed in the module, or may have dropped off a ledge or rug edge. Cleaning the right wheel module fixes this in most cases.

Affected Models

  • Roomba 600 Series
  • Roomba 700 Series
  • Roomba 800 Series
  • Roomba i3
  • Roomba i7

Common Causes

  • Hair or thread wrapped around the right wheel axle preventing it from turning
  • Hard debris (pebble, small object) wedged in the right wheel module housing
  • Right wheel dropped off a ledge, step, or rug edge and cannot get traction
  • Dirt build-up under the wheel module cover causing the suspension to bind
  • Right wheel module bearing or motor worn out on older units

How to Fix It

  1. Flip Roomba upside down. Locate the right side drive wheel — the larger wheel on the right when looking at the underside.

Press the wheel inward — it should compress smoothly and spring back. If it feels sticky or does not spring back, the suspension is clogged.

  2. Pull all visible hair and thread from around the wheel axle and the gap between the wheel and the housing.

Use your fingers or a small pick. Hair wraps tightly around the axle and is easy to miss — look carefully at the point where the wheel meets the chassis.

  3. On models where the wheel module pulls out (firm upward pressure), remove it and clean the axle shaft and housing interior thoroughly.

Not all Roomba models have a removable wheel module. If yours does not, clean as much as you can reach from the outside.

  4. Set Roomba on a flat, open floor surface away from rugs and thresholds, then press CLEAN to restart.

Starting on a flat surface ensures the wheel is not immediately lifted again, which could retrigger Error 3.

  5. If Error 3 returns immediately after cleaning, press and hold CLEAN for 10 seconds to reset Roomba, then try again.

A reset clears any cached sensor state. If Error 3 still returns after a clean and reset, the wheel module needs replacing.

When to Call a Professional

If the right wheel spins freely by hand with no debris present but Error 3 keeps returning, the wheel motor or sensor has failed. Contact iRobot support at irobot.com/support or order a replacement wheel module.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Roomba have separate error codes for the left and right wheel?

iRobot assigns separate codes — Error 3 for the right wheel, Error 4 for the left — so you know exactly which side to inspect. This saves time compared to checking both wheels.

My right wheel looks clean but Error 3 keeps coming back. What now?

Try a Roomba reset: press and hold CLEAN for 10 seconds until the light ring swirls. If Error 3 returns after a clean and reset, the wheel module's internal motor or sensor has failed and the module needs replacing. Replacement modules are available directly from iRobot and third-party suppliers.
