Error 4

iRobot Robot Vacuum

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

Roomba Error 4 means the left side drive wheel is stuck. Hair wrapped around the wheel axle, debris jammed in the module, or the robot getting its left wheel stuck on a threshold are the most common causes. Cleaning the wheel clears the error in most cases.

Affected Models

  • Roomba 600 Series
  • Roomba 700 Series
  • Roomba 800 Series
  • Roomba i3
  • Roomba e5

Common Causes

  • Hair or thread tightly wrapped around the left wheel axle
  • Hard debris wedged in the left wheel module housing
  • Left wheel dropped off a step or caught on a raised rug edge
  • Left wheel module suspension stuck due to accumulated grime
  • Left wheel motor worn or bearing failed on older units

How to Fix It

  1. Flip Roomba upside down. Locate the left side drive wheel — the larger wheel on the left when looking at the underside.

Press the wheel inward — it should compress and spring back with smooth resistance. A stiff or non-springing wheel means the suspension track is dirty.

  2. Pull all hair and thread from around the axle and the gap between the wheel and the housing by hand or with a pick.

Hair winds onto the axle invisibly from the outside. You often need to pull several centimetres of compressed hair from a tight coil around the shaft.

  3. If the left wheel module is removable on your model, pull it out and clean the axle shaft and the inside of the housing.

After removing, use scissors to cut through any tightly-wound hair on the axle before pulling it free — this is easier than trying to unwind it.

  4. Reinsert the wheel module, place Roomba on flat open floor, and press CLEAN to restart.

Avoid restarting near a rug edge or doorway threshold — these are the most common places where the left wheel gets lifted and triggers Error 4.

When to Call a Professional

If the left wheel spins freely by hand with no debris but Error 4 keeps returning after a reset, the wheel motor or hall-effect sensor has failed. Order a replacement left wheel module or contact iRobot support.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is Error 4 different from Error 1 or Error 5?

Error 1 means a wheel has been lifted off the ground (like going over an edge). Error 4 means the left wheel is stuck due to debris or a blockage. Error 5 means the wheel motor itself has stalled. They share causes but point to different sides and severity levels.

How do I prevent the wheels from getting clogged so often?

Clean both wheel axles every 2–4 weeks, especially if you have pets or long hair in the household. A quick pull of the visible hair takes under a minute and prevents both Error 3 and Error 4 from appearing.
