5 Flashes
Chamberlain Garage Door Opener
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
Chamberlain LiftMaster diagnostic LED flashing 5 times means the RPM/travel module reported a fault.
The opener watches a Hall-effect sensor on the motor shaft to count rotations and learn how far the door has travelled.
If those pulses do not match what the logic board expected, 5 flashes posts.
Cause is usually a worn motor, a loose RPM sensor wire, or travel limits that need to be relearned.
Affected Models
- Chamberlain B970
- Chamberlain B1381
- Chamberlain B6713T
- LiftMaster 8500W
- LiftMaster 8550WLB
- LiftMaster 8587W
Common Causes
- Travel limits never set after install
- Travel limits drifted after a power outage
- RPM sensor wire loose at the logic board
- Motor brushes worn (older models)
- Motor capacitor weakening
- Logic board RPM input failed
How to Fix It
-
Try a relearn first.
Find the Learn button on the back of the opener (usually near the antenna).
Press and hold for 6 seconds — the LED goes off.
Use the wall button to walk the door fully open, then fully closed.
The opener relearns travel and many 5 flashes clear here. -
Disconnect power and inspect.
Unplug the opener.
Remove the cover.
Locate the small RPM sensor on the motor — usually a magnet on the shaft and a Hall sensor on a small board next to it.
Reseat the connector at the logic board. -
Check the harness routing.
Wires from the RPM sensor to the logic board can chafe over years of vibration.
Damaged insulation = intermittent pulses = 5 flashes.
Reroute or wrap any rubbed sections with electrical tape. -
Listen for the motor.
Restore power and try a door cycle.
Strong, steady motor sound = motor is fine.
Whining, slowing under load, or stopping mid-travel = worn motor brushes or weak capacitor.
Capacitors are 10-20 USD; replacement motors are 100-200 USD. -
Test door balance.
Disconnect the door from the opener via the red emergency release.
Lift the door by hand to halfway open.
It should stay there.
Drops or rises = spring tension wrong, which can cause the opener to work harder than spec and trigger 5 flashes. -
Replace the logic board.
If wiring is clean and the motor runs strong but 5 flashes persists, the logic board has failed.
Boards are 60-150 USD and swap with a few connectors.
For older openers, full unit replacement is often more economical.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do travel limits drift after a power cut?
Some older Chamberlain models store travel limits in volatile memory.
A power cut wipes them.
Newer openers retain limits across outages.
If yours drifts every storm, a logic board upgrade or new opener resolves the inconvenience.
