6 Flashes
Chamberlain Garage Door Opener
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
Chamberlain LiftMaster diagnostic LED flashing 6 times means the motor or RPM sensor circuit failed in a way the opener cannot recover from.
Where 5 flashes is often a software/learn issue, 6 flashes points more firmly at hardware — a bad RPM sensor, a failing motor, or a logic board with a damaged input.
Diagnosis usually starts with the RPM sensor since it is the cheapest part.
Affected Models
- Chamberlain B970
- Chamberlain B1381
- Chamberlain B6713T
- LiftMaster 8500W
- LiftMaster 8550WLB
- LiftMaster 8587W
Common Causes
- RPM sensor failed (Hall sensor or magnet missing)
- Motor brushes worn through (older models)
- Motor windings shorted
- Logic board RPM input section damaged
- Severe vibration from a loose mount damaged sensor wires
- Recent service work where the sensor was reinstalled wrong
How to Fix It
-
Try a relearn first.
Hold the Learn button for 6 seconds.
Walk the door open and closed with the wall button.
Some 6 flashes events clear with a fresh learn — try this before pulling the unit apart. -
Disconnect power.
Unplug the opener from the ceiling outlet.
Wait 1 minute before opening any cover.
Capacitors in the motor circuit can hold charge briefly. -
Inspect the RPM sensor.
Locate the small board next to the motor with a Hall-effect IC, plus the magnet on the motor shaft.
A missing magnet (knocked off during service) is the most common surprise finding.
Reattach with a small dab of epoxy if so. -
Reseat the sensor harness.
Disconnect the connector at the logic board, blow out dust, reseat firmly.
Inspect the wires for chafing.
Many 6 flashes cases trace to a vibration-loose connector after years of use. -
Replace the RPM sensor.
If the sensor magnet is intact and harness is clean but 6 flashes returns, the sensor itself has failed.
Genuine LiftMaster RPM sensor kits are 25-60 USD.
Three or four screws and a connector — about a 30-minute swap. -
Test motor windings.
Disconnect the motor leads from the logic board.
Multimeter on ohms across the leads — a healthy DC motor reads a few ohms.
Open circuit (no reading) means motor windings are dead.
Replacement motors are 100-200 USD. -
Replace the logic board.
If sensor is good and motor reads OK but 6 flashes persists, the logic board RPM input section has failed.
Boards are 60-150 USD.
For openers older than 10 years, a full new opener (200-400 USD installed) is often the better choice.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I keep using the door manually?
Yes — pull the red emergency release cord and operate the door by hand until repair.
The door is heavy; lift carefully and keep children away.
This is a temporary measure for one or two days, not a permanent solution.
