App Not Connecting
Philips Hue Smart Lighting Hub
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
The Philips Hue app cannot find the Bridge when the phone is on a different network than the Bridge, or the app has lost its authentication token. Ensure your phone is on the same WiFi network as the Bridge. If the app asks you to press the button on the Bridge, the token has expired — press the round button and let the app reconnect.
Affected Models
- Philips Hue Bridge v2 (square)
- Philips Hue App iOS
- Philips Hue App Android
Common Causes
- Phone connected to a different WiFi network or on mobile data — cannot see the Bridge locally
- App authentication token expired — needs re-authentication by pressing the Bridge button
- VPN app on the phone routing traffic away from the local network
- Bridge on a different subnet than the phone (advanced router configurations)
- Hue app cache corrupted
How to Fix It
-
Confirm your phone is on the same WiFi network as the Bridge.
The Hue app discovers the Bridge by scanning the local network. If your phone is connected to a guest WiFi network, a different SSID, or is on mobile data, it cannot see the Bridge. Connect to the same WiFi network the Bridge is connected to.
-
Disable any VPN apps on your phone.
VPN apps route traffic through remote servers, bypassing the local network. With a VPN active, the Hue app cannot reach the Bridge on your local network. Disable the VPN temporarily, then open the Hue app.
-
Press the round button on the Bridge when the app prompts you.
If the Hue app says 'Press the button on the Bridge', the app's authentication certificate has expired or was cleared. Physically press the large round button on top of the Hue Bridge within 30 seconds of the app prompt. This re-establishes the trusted connection between the app and the Bridge.
-
Clear the Hue app cache.
On Android: Settings > Apps > Philips Hue > Storage > Clear Cache. On iOS: delete and reinstall the app (iOS does not allow clearing cache separately). After clearing the cache, you will need to press the Bridge button again to reconnect.
-
Try the Hue app from a web browser as a diagnostic.
Visit your Bridge's local API at http://[bridge-IP]/api/config in a phone browser while on the same WiFi. If this loads a JSON response, the Bridge is working and the problem is in the app. If it does not load, the Bridge itself has a network problem — follow the Bridge Offline steps.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does the Hue app work at home but not remotely?
Remote access requires the Bridge to be connected to the Hue cloud (LED 2 on the Bridge must be solid blue). If LED 2 is off, the Bridge is not connected to Hue's servers and remote control is unavailable. Local control (when on your home WiFi) still works even without cloud connectivity.
I reinstalled the Hue app and now it does not remember my lights — how do I restore them?
All your Hue settings are stored on the Bridge itself, not in the app. Re-installing the app does not delete your lights, rooms, or scenes. Open the app after reinstallation, press the button on the Bridge when prompted, and all your previous configuration will reload from the Bridge.
