Bulb Not Responding
Philips Hue Smart Light Bulb
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
A Philips Hue bulb showing as unreachable has lost its Zigbee connection to the Hue Bridge. The most common causes are the bulb being switched off at the wall (no power = no connection), the Bridge and bulb being too far apart, or the Zigbee mesh being disrupted. Ensure the wall switch is always on for Hue bulbs.
Affected Models
- Philips Hue White
- Philips Hue White and Colour Ambiance
- Philips Hue Filament
- Philips Hue Play
- Philips Hue BR30
- Philips Hue GU10
Common Causes
- Wall switch turned off — Hue bulbs lose power and drop off the Zigbee mesh
- Bulb too far from the Hue Bridge or other Hue bulbs — weak Zigbee signal
- Hue Bridge lost internet connection — app reports bulbs as unreachable remotely
- Bulb firmware needs updating
- Zigbee mesh disrupted — nearby bulbs removed or interference from other devices
- Bulb hardware failure
How to Fix It
-
Check that the wall switch for the bulb is turned on.
Hue bulbs must always be powered at the wall switch — they receive app commands via Zigbee radio, which requires constant mains power. Turning off the wall switch cuts power to the bulb, which then drops off the Zigbee mesh and shows as unreachable. If the wall switch was turned off, turn it back on and wait 30-60 seconds for the bulb to rejoin the mesh.
-
Power cycle the bulb.
Turn off the wall switch, wait 10 seconds, and turn it back on. Sometimes a Hue bulb loses its mesh connection and needs a power cycle to rejoin. Alternatively, in the Hue app: tap and hold the light > Device settings > Power-on behaviour > set to Last state.
-
Check the Hue Bridge is online.
Open the Hue app. If all lights show as unreachable simultaneously, the Bridge has lost its connection. Check the Bridge's internet LED — it should be solid blue. Restart the Bridge by unplugging it for 10 seconds.
-
Move the Bridge closer or add more bulbs to strengthen the mesh.
Philips Hue uses Zigbee mesh networking — each powered Hue bulb acts as a mesh repeater. A bulb far from the Bridge with no other bulbs between them may have an unreliable connection. Adding a Hue bulb between them, or moving the Bridge to a more central location, improves range.
-
Delete the bulb from the app and re-add it.
In the Hue app, go to Settings > Lights > select the unreachable bulb > Delete. Then add it back: Settings > Add lights > search. Re-adding the bulb re-establishes its Zigbee pairing with the Bridge.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do my Hue bulbs turn on to full white when power is restored?
By default, Hue bulbs power on to full bright white when they receive power for the first time after an outage. This can be changed in the Hue app under each bulb's Device settings > Power-on behaviour. Set it to Last state (returns to the last colour and brightness before power was cut) or a specific scene.
Can I use a dimmer switch with Philips Hue bulbs?
Standard dimmer switches are not compatible with Hue bulbs and can damage them. Hue bulbs require constant full voltage — dimmer switches work by varying the voltage, which the Hue bulb's internal driver cannot handle. Philips makes Hue-compatible smart dimmer switches (the Hue Dimmer Switch) which work wirelessly without wiring into the circuit.
