Bridge Offline
Philips Hue Smart Lighting Hub
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
A Philips Hue Bridge that shows as offline cannot be reached from the app — either locally or remotely. The most common causes are the Ethernet cable disconnected, the router restarted and assigned the Bridge a new IP address, or the Bridge firmware needing an update. Check all cable connections and restart the Bridge.
Affected Models
- Philips Hue Bridge v2 (square)
- Philips Hue Bridge v1 (round)
Common Causes
- Ethernet cable disconnected or damaged at the Bridge or router end
- Router restarted and assigned the Bridge a different IP address
- Bridge firmware crash — needs a power cycle
- Hue cloud servers temporarily offline — affects remote access only
- Bridge placed too far from the router with a poor Ethernet cable run
How to Fix It
-
Check the Bridge LED indicators.
The Hue Bridge v2 (square) has three LEDs on the front. LED 1 (power): should be solid blue. LED 2 (internet): solid blue = connected to Hue servers; flashing = connecting; off = no internet. LED 3 (Zigbee): solid blue = normal Zigbee activity. If LED 2 is off or flashing, the Bridge cannot reach the internet.
-
Check the Ethernet cable.
Unplug the Ethernet cable from the back of the Bridge and from the router port, and firmly reconnect both ends. Try a different Ethernet cable if available. Also try a different port on the router. A failed Ethernet cable is a common cause of Bridge going offline.
-
Restart the Bridge.
Unplug the Bridge power adapter, wait 10 seconds, and plug it back in. Wait 2 minutes for the Bridge to fully restart and reconnect. A firmware state error that causes the Bridge to lose its network connection is resolved by a power cycle.
-
Restart your router.
If the Bridge LED 2 is off after a Bridge restart, the router may be the issue. Unplug your router for 30 seconds and restart it. After the router comes back online, the Bridge should reconnect automatically.
-
Assign the Bridge a static IP address.
Recurring 'Bridge offline' problems after router restarts usually mean the router is assigning the Bridge a different IP address each time, confusing the app. In your router admin panel, find the Bridge's MAC address in the connected devices list and assign it a static (reserved) IP. This prevents the Bridge address from changing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I control Philips Hue without the Bridge?
Most Philips Hue bulbs require the Bridge to connect to the app and use automations. The Hue Bluetooth range (bulbs with a Bluetooth logo) can be controlled directly from the Hue Bluetooth app without a Bridge, but with significant limitations: maximum 10 bulbs, no remote access, no automations, no third-party integrations. The Bridge unlocks the full Hue system.
My Hue Bridge LED 2 is flashing but never goes solid — what does that mean?
A flashing internet LED that never becomes solid means the Bridge is repeatedly trying but failing to connect to Philips Hue's cloud servers. Local control (within your home) still works. Check your internet connection — try loading a website on your phone via the same WiFi to confirm the internet is working. If internet is working, the Hue cloud servers may be temporarily down — check status.meethue.com.
