Wrong Color

Philips Hue Smart Bulb

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

Open the Hue app, select the light, and manually set the colour to white or your preferred colour — a running automation or active scene is overriding your manual setting. Check Automations for any active colour routines and disable them. If the bulb is stuck on one colour and the app cannot change it, factory reset the bulb with 6 power cycles.

Affected Models

  • Philips Hue White and Colour Ambiance (E27 / E14 / GU10 / BR30)
  • Hue Lightstrip Plus
  • Hue Play bar / gradient strip
  • Hue Go and portable lights

Common Causes

  • An active scene or automation overriding manual colour changes
  • Entertainment Area mode left running from a previous session
  • Circadian Lighting routine adjusting colour temperature automatically
  • Hue app on another device (phone, tablet, Alexa) sending conflicting commands
  • Bulb firmware glitch causing it to ignore colour commands

How to Fix It

  1. Check for active automations

Hue app → Automations. Look for any routine, Wake Up, Go to Sleep, or custom automation that targets the affected light. Disable it temporarily and try changing the colour manually.

  2. Stop Entertainment Area mode

If Hue Sync or an Entertainment Area is active, it overrides all manual colour control. Open the Hue app → Entertainment Areas → ensure no area is in active mode. Also close the Hue Sync app on any PC.

  3. Disable Circadian Lighting

Hue app → Settings → Energy → Circadian Lighting → off for the affected room. Circadian Lighting automatically shifts colour temperature throughout the day, which may conflict with a colour you set manually.

  4. Set colour directly in the app

Tap the light in the Hue app → tap the colour wheel → select the colour or temperature you want. If the colour jumps back immediately, an automation is actively overriding it.

  5. Factory reset the bulb

Turn the wall switch off and on 6 times (1 second off, 1 second on per cycle). The bulb blinks to confirm the reset. Re-add it to the app via Settings → Lights → Add Light.

When to Call a Professional

A Hue bulb stuck on one colour that does not respond to the app after a factory reset has a failed LED driver. Replace the bulb — Hue bulbs are not repairable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Philips Hue bulb turns on at a random colour after a power cut — why?

After losing power, Hue bulbs default to their power-on behaviour setting. Change it in the Hue app: select the light → tap the settings (cog) → Power on behaviour → set it to Last State or a specific colour.

Hue bulb is always orange/warm even when I set it to white — why?

The bulb may be a White Ambiance model which only adjusts colour temperature (warm to cool white), not full colour. Colour Ambiance models (marked 'Colour') can produce all colours. White Ambiance cannot show saturated colours.

Hue colour changed after linking to Alexa or Google — why?

Voice assistants sometimes apply their own scene or colour when you ask them to turn on a light. Say 'set the light to warm white' rather than just 'turn on the light' to control the exact colour via voice.
