Lights Not Responding

Philips Hue Smart Bulb

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

Reboot the Hue Bridge: unplug it for 10 seconds, plug back in, wait 2 minutes. Check the physical wall switch — if someone flipped it off, the bulb has no power and cannot respond to the app. If only some lights are unresponsive, they may be too far from the Bridge — Zigbee range is about 10 metres indoors.

Affected Models

  • Philips Hue White bulbs
  • Philips Hue White and Colour Ambiance
  • Philips Hue GU10 / E14 / E27
  • Hue Lightstrip Plus
  • Hue Play bar / gradient strip

Common Causes

  • Hue Bridge lost its internet or local network connection
  • Physical wall switch turned off cutting power to the bulb
  • Zigbee signal too weak to reach distant bulbs
  • Hue app out of date or cached session expired
  • Bulb firmware update running in the background

How to Fix It

  1. Reboot the Hue Bridge

Unplug the Hue Bridge power cable for 10 seconds, then plug back in. Wait 2 minutes for it to reconnect to your router. All three LEDs on the Bridge should turn solid blue/white when ready.

  2. Check the wall switch

A Hue bulb that has had its wall switch flipped off has no power and will show as unreachable in the app. Make sure the physical switch is in the on position at all times.

  3. Check Zigbee range

Zigbee has a range of about 10 metres indoors through walls. If lights in a far room stop responding, add a Hue bulb, Hue plug, or Hue Bridge extender between the Bridge and the distant lights to extend the mesh.

  4. Force-close and reopen the Hue app

On your phone, fully close the Philips Hue app and reopen it. The app sometimes loses its local Bridge connection and needs a fresh handshake.

  5. Delete and re-add unresponsive lights

Settings → Lights → select the unresponsive bulb → Delete. Then Settings → Lights → Add Light. This re-pairs the bulb to the Bridge on a clean Zigbee channel.

When to Call a Professional

Lights not responding is always a software or network issue. No hardware service is needed — a Bridge reboot and re-pairing resolves the vast majority of cases.

Frequently Asked Questions

Philips Hue lights work in the app but not with Alexa or Google — why?

The Alexa or Google Home skill has lost its connection to the Hue account. Open the Alexa or Google Home app → Devices → Hue → Unlink → re-link the skill and re-discover devices.

Hue lights were working yesterday but not today — what happened?

An overnight router restart or IP address change may have disconnected the Bridge. Reboot the Hue Bridge and wait 2 minutes. Also check that your router assigned the Bridge the same IP address as before.

Half my Hue lights work, half don't — why?

The unresponsive bulbs are likely out of Zigbee range or on a different room circuit. Check that their wall switches are on, then add a Hue bulb closer to the Bridge to strengthen the mesh in that area.
