Bulb Flickering
Philips Hue Smart Bulb
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
Replace any dimmer switch on the circuit with a standard (non-dimming) switch — Hue bulbs require full constant power and flicker on dimmer circuits. If using a Philips Hue dimmer switch, reset it: hold Setup for 10 seconds until the LED flashes. A Hue bulb set to very low brightness (under 10%) will naturally flicker — increase brightness above 20%.
Affected Models
- Philips Hue White bulbs
- Philips Hue White and Colour Ambiance
- Philips Hue GU10 / E14 / E27 / BR30
- Hue Lightstrip Plus
- Hue Play bar
Common Causes
- Standard (non-Hue) dimmer switch on the same circuit starving the bulb of full power
- Brightness set below 10% where LEDs naturally flicker
- Weak Zigbee signal causing on/off commands to arrive out of sequence
- Bulb firmware update in progress (temporary flicker)
- Failing bulb driver — hardware fault in older bulbs
How to Fix It
-
Check for a dimmer switch on the circuit
Philips Hue bulbs must receive full, uninterrupted mains power. A standard trailing-edge or leading-edge dimmer switch on the wall will cause flickering. Replace it with a standard on/off switch, or use a Philips Hue Smart Dimmer Switch instead.
-
Increase brightness above 20%
LED bulbs have a minimum threshold — at very low brightness settings they flicker rather than dim smoothly. Open the Hue app and set the bulb to at least 20% brightness.
-
Check Zigbee signal strength
Move the Hue Bridge closer to the flickering bulbs, or add another Hue bulb or Hue plug between the bridge and the affected bulb to extend the Zigbee mesh network.
-
Update bulb firmware
Open the Hue app → Settings → Software Update → Update All. Outdated firmware can cause instability. Note that the bulb may flash briefly during the update — this is normal.
-
Delete and re-add the bulb
Hue app → Settings → Lights → select the bulb → Delete. Then add it again: Settings → Lights → Add Light. This resets the bulb's pairing state and clears corrupted schedules.
When to Call a Professional
Hue bulbs that flicker at full brightness with a standard switch and a strong Zigbee signal have a failed LED driver. Hue bulbs are not repairable — replace the bulb.
Frequently Asked Questions
Philips Hue bulb flickers only at night — why?
Nighttime automations typically set a low brightness which is below the LED's stable operating threshold. Edit the automation in the Hue app and set a minimum brightness of 20% for evening/night scenes.
Hue bulb flickers when turned on but then stabilises — is it broken?
Some brief flicker on startup is normal as the LED driver initialises. If it lasts more than 2 seconds, check for a dimmer switch on the circuit or update the bulb firmware.
Hue bulb flickers after I added a new bulb to the room — why?
Adding a new Zigbee device can temporarily disrupt the mesh network as it re-routes. Wait 10–15 minutes for the Zigbee network to stabilise. If flickering continues, move the Hue Bridge closer.
