7235

Amazon Prime Video Software

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

Prime Video Error 7235 means the HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) handshake between your streaming device, HDMI cable, AV receiver, and TV failed.
One link in that chain doesn't support HDCP 2.2 (required for HD/4K), or the cable is dropping bits, or a converter is in the way.
The fix is to identify the weak link and either replace it or rearrange the connections.

Affected Models

  • Prime Video on Fire TV connected through an AV receiver
  • Prime Video on Roku, Apple TV, Chromecast
  • PCs streaming Prime Video through DisplayPort or HDMI to a TV
  • Older 4K TVs with first-gen HDMI ports

Common Causes

  • AV receiver doesn't support HDCP 2.2 on all inputs
  • HDMI cable is too long or low quality — drops the HDCP handshake
  • HDMI splitter in the chain that strips HDCP
  • TV's HDMI port doesn't support HDCP 2.2 (sometimes only one port does)
  • PC graphics driver out of date (Windows playback)
  • Two displays mirrored on a PC, only one HDCP-capable

How to Fix It

  1. Plug the streaming device directly into the TV.

Bypass the AV receiver and any splitters.
HDMI cable straight from the Fire TV / Roku / Apple TV into the TV.
If 7235 goes away, the receiver or splitter is the problem.
If it still appears, the TV port or cable is the issue.

  2. Try a different HDMI port on the TV.

Some TVs (especially mid-range 4K from 2018-2020) only support HDCP 2.2 on a specific HDMI input — usually labeled HDMI 1 or HDCP 2.2.
Move the streaming device to that port.
The TV's manual lists which port supports HDCP 2.2.

  3. Replace the HDMI cable.

Old or cheap HDMI cables drop HDCP handshakes intermittently.
Use a known-good 'High Speed' or 'Premium High Speed' rated cable for HD; '8K Ultra High Speed' for 4K.
Avoid cables longer than 5m (15 ft) without an active repeater.
This step alone fixes a meaningful share of 7235.

  4. Update PC graphics driver (Windows only).

On a Windows PC, open Device Manager → Display Adapters → right-click your card → Update Driver.
Or download from NVIDIA / AMD / Intel directly.
Old drivers can fail HDCP negotiation on some TVs and result in Error 7235.

  5. Disable mirrored displays.

On a laptop, if you're mirroring to an external monitor, the player demands HDCP on every active display.
If your laptop screen doesn't support HDCP 2.2 (most do, some old ones don't), you get 7235.
Switch to single-display mode on the external monitor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will downgrading to SD avoid the HDCP check?

Sometimes, yes.
HDCP 1.4 is required for HD; HDCP 2.2 only for 4K HDR.
Some TVs that fail HDCP 2.2 still pass HDCP 1.4.
Prime Video doesn't expose a manual quality switch on every device, but on web playback you can right-click → Quality and pick SD.
If that plays cleanly, the TV's HDCP 2.2 support is the issue.
