Unofficial WhatsApp
WhatsApp Software
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
WhatsApp 'You may be using an unofficial version of WhatsApp' (sometimes 'You need the official WhatsApp to use your account') means WhatsApp's servers detected that the app talking to them is a modified third-party version — usually GBWhatsApp, FMWhatsApp, WhatsApp Plus, or YoWhatsApp.
The account is given a short ban (typically a few hours, then 24 hours, then permanent on repeat).
The fix is to install the official WhatsApp and migrate your data.
Affected Models
- Android phones running a 'mod' WhatsApp
- Phones that previously used an unofficial WhatsApp client
- Android emulators running modified APKs
Common Causes
- Installed GBWhatsApp, FMWhatsApp, WhatsApp Plus, or another mod
- Sideloaded an APK from a non-Play-Store source that turned out to be modified
- Recently uninstalled the mod but data folder remained — WhatsApp still flags it
- Using WhatsApp Business mod instead of the official version
How to Fix It
-
Back up your chats inside the unofficial app first.
Open the unofficial WhatsApp.
Go to Settings → Chats → Backup → Backup now.
Wait for it to finish.
The backup is saved locally to /WhatsApp/Databases on internal storage — not Google Drive (mods often don't sync to Drive). -
Copy the local backup to a safe folder.
Use the Files app.
Navigate to internal storage → WhatsApp → Databases.
Look for files named msgstore.db.crypt14 or similar.
Copy them somewhere outside the WhatsApp folder (Downloads is fine). -
Uninstall the unofficial app.
Settings → Apps → find the modified WhatsApp → Uninstall.
Don't worry about losing the chat data — it's the local backup files that hold the chats.
Make sure to also clear the WhatsApp folder if it remains. -
Install the official WhatsApp.
Open Google Play Store.
Search 'WhatsApp Messenger' (the publisher must be 'WhatsApp LLC').
Install.
Open it, agree to terms, enter your phone number for verification.
Don't restore yet — set the local backup file up first. -
Move the backup file to the official location.
Use Files to move msgstore.db.crypt14 (and other Databases files) to /WhatsApp/Databases on internal storage.
Some mods use a different folder name like /GBWhatsApp/Databases — rename or move so the path is exactly /WhatsApp/Databases. -
Restore in the official app.
Continue official WhatsApp setup.
At the restore prompt, tap Restore — it finds the local backup automatically.
Wait for chats to import.
The ban lifts as soon as you sign in with the official version (assuming this was your first warning).
Repeat offences extend the ban.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does WhatsApp ban mod apps?
Modified clients break WhatsApp's terms — they remove restrictions on forwarding, hide read receipts, and don't enforce the same end-to-end encryption guarantees.
From WhatsApp's perspective, mod users are uncertified clients on their network.
The detection runs server-side; switching to the official app clears the flag almost immediately.
