Rinnai Tankless Water Heater

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Rinnai code 10 means air supply or exhaust blockage.
The control monitors combustion fan speed and pressure during start-up.
If those readings do not match what the unit expects with a clear vent path, code 10 latches and the burner refuses to light.
The fault is almost always physical — debris, ice, or a nest at the termination — and clearing it is a 15-minute job.

Affected Models

  • Rinnai RU130
  • Rinnai RU160
  • Rinnai RU199
  • Rinnai V53e
  • Rinnai V65e
  • Rinnai V75e
  • Rinnai Sensei series

Common Causes

  • Bird's nest, wasp nest, or leaves blocking the outdoor termination
  • Ice or snow over the vent screen in winter
  • Vent run too long or with too many elbows for the model
  • Combustion fan slowed by dust buildup
  • Loose vent joint pulling in too much room air
  • Inlet air filter on the unit clogged

How to Fix It

  1. Walk to the vent termination.

Find the outside vent cap or sidewall termination.
Look for nests, lint, leaves, or a screen iced over.
Clear by hand or with a soft brush.
This single step resolves the bulk of code 10 reports.

  2. Power off and inspect the inlet.

    Switch off the dedicated breaker.
    Open the front cover.
Look at the air intake screen — dust and lint accumulate over months.
Vacuum gently or wipe with a soft cloth.

  3. Spin the combustion fan by hand.

With power off, locate the small fan at the top of the unit.
The wheel should spin freely with a flick.
Stiff or noisy = bearing failure.
Replacement fan motors are 80-180 USD.

  4. Check vent length.

Rinnai publishes a maximum equivalent length per model — typically 35-65 feet depending on size and number of elbows.
If your install is over the limit, code 10 will keep returning.
Reroute or upsize the vent diameter to spec.

  5. Inspect every vent joint.

Concentric vents need clean seals at every joint.
A loose joint pulls room air into the burner and the fan curve never matches the calibration.
Re-glue PVC joints with the proper cement and confirm screws are tight on metal vents.

  6. Reset and test.

    Restore power.
Run hot water at a fixture for 5 minutes.
    Code 10 should not return.
If it does, the combustion fan or the pressure sensor on the board is failing — those are tech-level repairs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does code 10 only happen on cold mornings?

Frost on the vent screen is the usual culprit.
The screen ices over overnight, the unit struggles on first start, and code 10 latches.
Once sun melts the ice, normal operation returns.
A bird-screen swap or a heated vent termination prevents recurrence.
