Replace Filter

Honeywell Air Purifier

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

Honeywell air purifiers light a 'Replace Filter' indicator when the HEPA filter usage timer reaches the recommended interval — typically 12 months at normal use.
The unit continues to run.
The light is a maintenance reminder.
Replace the HEPA filter and reset the indicator using the button combo on your model — usually pressing and holding the Filter Reset button for 2 seconds.

Affected Models

  • Honeywell HPA100
  • Honeywell HPA200
  • Honeywell HPA300
  • Honeywell HPA250B
  • Honeywell HPA5300
  • Honeywell HPA830
  • Honeywell InsightHEPA

Common Causes

  • HEPA filter usage hours crossed the 12-month threshold
  • Filter never replaced since purchase
  • Counter not reset after the previous swap
  • High-pollution use loaded the filter faster than expected

How to Fix It

  1. Order the correct HEPA filter.

Honeywell uses different filter sizes per model family — R, U, T sizes are common.
Check the manual or the back of the unit for the part number.
Genuine HEPA filters are 25-60 USD; certified compatibles are slightly less.

  2. Power off and unplug.

Switch the unit off and pull the plug.
Wait for the fan to stop fully before opening the cabinet.

  3. Open the front cover.

Most Honeywell HPA models have a magnetic or clip-on front cover.
    Pull straight off.
The pre-filter (carbon mesh) is on the outside; the HEPA layer is behind it.

  4. Replace the HEPA filter.

Pull the old HEPA out — typically just a flat panel or rolled cylinder.
Insert the new filter the same way.
Note any arrows on the new filter for orientation.

  5. Replace the pre-filter too.

While the cover is off, replace the carbon pre-filter as well.
Pre-filters are 5-15 USD and trap odours and large particles before they reach the HEPA layer.
Replacing both at the same interval extends HEPA life.

  6. Reinstall the cover.

Snap the front cover back on.
Make sure all corners are seated.
A loose cover makes the unit louder and reduces filtration efficiency.

  7. Reset the indicator.

On most Honeywell models, hold the Filter Reset or Filter Check button for about 2 seconds.
    The light goes out.
If it does not, refer to the manual — some models need a different button combo.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I keep using the unit if I do not replace immediately?

The filter still works for some weeks past the indicator, with reduced efficiency.
For people without allergies or respiratory issues, a few extra weeks is fine.
For sensitive users, do not delay — particles slip through saturated HEPA fibres.
