LED Flashing Red
Bose Bluetooth Speaker
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
A red flashing LED on a Bose speaker usually means the battery is critically low (below 10%) — charge it immediately. A solid red light while charging means charging has stopped due to a fault. A rapid red flash at startup can indicate a factory reset is in progress.
Affected Models
- Bose SoundLink Flex
- Bose SoundLink Max
- Bose SoundLink Color II / III
- Bose SoundLink Revolve / Revolve+
- Bose Portable Smart Speaker
Common Causes
- Battery critically low (below 10%) — most common cause
- Charging fault — charger not delivering power or battery refusing to charge
- Overtemperature protection — speaker too hot, paused charging to protect battery
- Factory reset sequence in progress on some models
How to Fix It
-
Plug the speaker in to charge.
If the LED is flashing red, charge level is critical. Use the original Bose USB-C cable and a quality charger (at least 5V/2A). The LED should change to amber/orange while charging.
-
Check the charging cable and port.
If you plug in and the LED stays red or turns off, the cable or charger is not delivering power. Try a different USB-C cable and a wall adapter rather than a laptop USB port.
-
Let the speaker cool down before charging.
Bose speakers pause charging above about 40°C to protect the battery. If the speaker is warm from use, leave it in a cool place for 15–20 minutes and then plug it back in.
-
Check the battery level via the Bose app.
Open the Bose Music app → your speaker. The battery percentage is shown here. This confirms whether low battery or a charging fault is causing the red LED.
-
Perform a factory reset if the red LED is unexplained.
On most Bose SoundLink speakers: hold the Power button for 10 seconds until you hear a sound and the LED changes. A reset clears any firmware state causing abnormal indicator behaviour.
When to Call a Professional
If the speaker will not charge and the LED stays red or does not light up when plugged in, the battery or charging port may need replacement. Contact Bose support.
Frequently Asked Questions
Bose SoundLink Flex flashing red and won't turn on — what is wrong?
The battery is completely flat and the speaker lacks power to boot. Plug it in and leave it charging for at least 20–30 minutes before attempting to turn it on again.
Red LED stays solid while charging — is this normal?
A solid red light during charging usually indicates a charging fault — the battery is not accepting charge. Try a different cable and charger. If the issue persists after 30 minutes, the battery or charging circuit may need service.
