Not Charging

Bose Bluetooth Speaker

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

Try a different USB-C or micro-USB cable — cable failure is the most common cause of Bose charging problems. Clean the charging port with a dry toothpick to remove lint blocking the connector. If the LED briefly flashes then goes off, the battery may need replacement.

Affected Models

  • Bose SoundLink Flex
  • Bose SoundLink Max
  • Bose SoundLink Color II / III
  • Bose SoundLink Revolve / Revolve+
  • Bose Portable Smart Speaker

Common Causes

  • Worn or broken charging cable (most common cause)
  • Lint or debris packed into the USB-C or micro-USB port
  • Depleted battery in deep-discharge protection mode
  • Faulty wall adapter not supplying enough current
  • Corroded charging port pins from moisture exposure

How to Fix It

  1. Try a different cable and adapter

Test with a known-good USB-C or micro-USB cable plugged into a wall adapter (not a laptop). Bose speakers need at least 5V/1A — many laptop USB ports deliver less.

  2. Clean the charging port

Shine a flashlight into the charging port. Use a dry toothpick or short burst of compressed air to remove any lint. Do not use metal tools. Lint blocking the connector prevents full seating.

  3. Let it charge for 30 minutes undisturbed

A battery in deep-discharge protection may not show a charging LED immediately. Leave it connected without pressing any buttons for 30 minutes before checking.

  4. Hard reset while connected to charger

With the charger connected, hold the Power button for 10 seconds. This wakes the battery management chip from a locked state that sometimes prevents charging.

  5. Check battery health

Bose speakers typically last 3–5 years before battery capacity drops significantly. If the speaker charges but drains in under 1 hour, the battery cell needs replacement.

When to Call a Professional

If the charging port is physically damaged or the battery no longer holds a charge after full cycles, contact Bose support — battery replacement is available for most SoundLink models.

Frequently Asked Questions

Bose SoundLink Flex charging LED flashes amber then turns off — what does it mean?

A brief flash followed by the LED turning off usually means the battery is in deep-discharge protection. Leave it connected to a wall charger for 1–2 hours before attempting to power on.

Bose speaker only charges slowly — why?

Slow charging is usually caused by a low-current power source (laptop USB or phone charger). Use a wall adapter rated at 5V/2A or higher. The SoundLink Flex supports USB-C PD for faster charging.

Bose speaker hot when charging — is that normal?

Mild warmth during charging is normal for lithium-ion batteries. If it becomes too hot to touch, disconnect it immediately — this indicates a battery fault that should be inspected by Bose service.
