Cable Disconnected

eero Mesh Router

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

The eero app shows 'Cable disconnected' (also seen as 'Ethernet cable is unplugged') when the gateway eero detects no link on its WAN port.
The whole network is offline — there's no internet for any client until it's resolved.
Cause is almost always a cable issue: unplugged, partially seated, broken connector, or a modem that's powered down.
Walking the cable end-to-end finds it most of the time.

Affected Models

  • eero Pro 6 / Pro 6E (gateway)
  • eero 6 / eero 6+ (gateway)
  • eero Max 7 (gateway)
  • Wired-backhaul mesh nodes (any model)

Common Causes

  • Ethernet cable unplugged from the modem or eero
  • Cable jiggled loose during nearby work
  • Modem powered off or rebooted
  • RJ45 connector damaged (broken locking tab)
  • Switch in between the modem and eero powered down
  • ISP outage reaching the modem (modem appears 'off' from eero's view)

How to Fix It

  1. Look at the cable physically.

Walk to your modem and your gateway eero.
Check that the Ethernet cable is fully clicked into both ends.
Push the connectors in firmly — you should hear or feel the lock engage.
If the locking tab is broken, the cable can sit there but not be making real contact.

  2. Check the modem.

Make sure the modem is powered on and showing healthy lights (typically Power, DS, US, Internet).
If the modem is in a fault state, the eero sees no link and reports 'Cable disconnected' even though the cable is fine.
Power-cycle the modem (unplug 30 seconds, plug back in) and wait 2-3 minutes.

  3. Try a different Ethernet cable.

Cables fail invisibly — they look fine but a wire inside is broken.
Swap the WAN cable for any spare Cat5e or Cat6 cable.
If the eero comes back online, the original cable was bad.
This step alone fixes a meaningful share of 'Cable disconnected' notifications.

  4. Try a different port on the modem.

Some modems have multiple LAN ports.
If the cable looks fine and the modem is healthy, move the cable to a different port.
A specific port can fail without affecting the rest of the modem.

  5. Power cycle modem and eero in order.

    Unplug both.
    Wait 30 seconds.
Plug the modem in first; wait for it to fully come online (usually 2 minutes, all lights solid).
    Then plug the eero in.
This sequence ensures the eero sees a stable WAN link from a fully-booted modem.

  6. Call the ISP if the modem won't come up.

If the modem refuses to get online no matter what, the issue is upstream — your ISP's line, a regional outage, or the modem itself failed.
Call the ISP and report no internet.
The eero is fine; it's correctly reporting that there's no upstream link.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does this happen even though everything looks plugged in?

Two common reasons.
One: a slightly-loose connector that wiggles free over time, especially if cables are tucked behind furniture.
Two: the cable is plugged into the eero's LAN port instead of the WAN port (only true on older eero models with separate ports).
On newer models the ports auto-sense, so this only catches first-time setup.
