Couldn't Update eero
eero Mesh Router
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
The eero app shows 'Couldn't update eero' (sometimes 'Update failed') when a firmware update started but didn't complete on one or more nodes.
The current firmware keeps running; the network isn't broken — it just hasn't moved to the new version.
eero retries automatically every few hours.
If the retry keeps failing, a manual nudge usually fixes it: power cycle the affected node, or temporarily move it closer to the gateway.
Affected Models
- eero Pro 6 / Pro 6E
- eero 6 / eero 6+
- eero Beacon
- eero Max 7
Common Causes
- Internet connection dropped mid-download
- Wireless backhaul too weak for a large firmware payload
- Power loss to a node during the apply phase
- Specific node is stuck on an old firmware that can't accept the upgrade path
- Storage corruption on the eero (rare but happens)
How to Fix It
-
Check internet is healthy.
Open a website on a device connected to the eero network.
If it doesn't load, the update failure is just a side effect of an internet outage — fix the internet first and the update retries automatically.
If the internet is fine, the issue is node-specific. -
Identify the node that failed.
Open the eero app → Settings → Software Update.
It lists nodes by name.
Updated nodes show the new version; failed ones show the old version with a 'Retry' or 'Couldn't update' label.
The next steps target that specific node. -
Power cycle the failed node.
Unplug the offending eero for 30 seconds.
Plug back in.
Wait for it to come online (solid white LED).
The next update window — usually within an hour — retries automatically.
This clears most stuck updates. -
Move the node closer to the gateway temporarily.
If wireless backhaul is weak, large firmware downloads fail.
Move the node to within 3-5 metres of the gateway for a few hours.
Tap 'Update Now' in the eero app.
Once the update completes, return the node to its usual spot.
Backhaul strength matters most during the download phase, not after. -
Restart the gateway eero if it's the problem.
If the gateway itself failed to update, power cycling just it (and letting the modem stay on) often resolves things.
If the gateway has been running for many months without a restart, this is overdue anyway. -
Contact eero support if it persists.
If a node fails to update across multiple retry windows, eero support can push a manual update from their side.
Open the eero app → Help → Contact Support.
They'll ask for the node's serial number (printed on the bottom).
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I worry if a firmware update fails?
Not urgently.
The current firmware on your eero is still working — the update is incremental, not critical for normal use.
But security patches do come through firmware, so don't ignore failed updates for weeks.
If retries don't get through within 24-48 hours, take action; otherwise let eero retry on its own schedule.
