Err 8
Dolphin Robotic Pool Cleaner
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
Dolphin Err 8 means the power supply lost communication with the cleaner.
Power flows over the same cable as the data signals — if the cable is kinked, damaged, or the connectors are corroded, the data drops out and Err 8 latches.
Cause is almost always the cable, the cable connector, or the swivel that lets the cable rotate freely.
Power supply failures are rare but possible.
Affected Models
- Dolphin Premier
- Dolphin Sigma
- Dolphin Nautilus CC Plus
- Dolphin M400
- Dolphin M600
- Dolphin Active 30i
Common Causes
- Cable kinked at the swivel from years of twisting
- Connector corroded at the cleaner end
- Connector pin bent at the power supply end
- Cable cut by a pool toy, dog, or sharp pool edge
- Power supply failed to handshake with the cleaner
- Cable swivel internal contacts worn
How to Fix It
-
Power off and disconnect.
Unplug the power supply from the wall.
Disconnect the cable from the power supply.
Inspect both ends of the cable carefully — pins should be straight, terminals should be clean and dry. -
Walk the entire cable length.
Slowly run the cable through your hands from end to end.
Look for kinks, cuts, abrasions, or sections where the inner conductor has pulled away from the outer sheath.
Damaged cable cannot be reliably patched — full replacement is the answer. -
Inspect the swivel.
The swivel is the rotating connector at the cleaner end.
It lets the cable spin without twisting up.
Worn swivels lose contact intermittently and post Err 8.
Maytronics swivel replacements are 30-80 USD. -
Clean the connectors.
Apply electrical contact cleaner to both connectors.
Wipe with a lint-free cloth.
Let dry fully before reconnecting.
Reseat firmly until the locking ring (if present) clicks home. -
Test the power supply.
If you have a multimeter, measure DC voltage at the power supply output (without the cleaner connected).
Should match the spec on the unit (typically 24-30V DC).
Wildly off = power supply failed; correct = problem is in the cable or cleaner. -
Replace the cable.
Genuine Maytronics cleaner cables are 200-400 USD depending on length and model.
This is the usual fix for chronic Err 8.
Cables are model-specific; ordering the wrong length or wrong end style means it will not fit. -
Contact Maytronics for power supply.
If the cable is brand new and Err 8 still posts, the power supply has failed.
Out-of-warranty replacement is 150-300 USD.
Worth getting a Maytronics service quote before replacing the entire cleaner.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I splice a cut cable myself?
Pool environments are unforgiving — splices fail from chlorine and water within months.
For a 1500-USD cleaner, the 200-400 USD cable replacement is cheap insurance against repeated Err 8 calls.
