Pairing Failed

Philips Hue Smart Bulb

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

Bring the bulb within 1 metre of the Hue Bridge for initial pairing — Zigbee range is limited for the first-time handshake. Factory reset the bulb first: turn the light switch off and on 6 times rapidly (off–on counts as one cycle). If the Hue app says 'Light not found', use the serial number on the bulb to add it manually.

Affected Models

  • Philips Hue White bulbs
  • Philips Hue White and Colour Ambiance
  • Philips Hue GU10 / E14 / E27 / BR30
  • Hue Lightstrip Plus
  • Third-party Zigbee bulbs (limited support)

Common Causes

  • Bulb previously paired to another Bridge and not factory reset
  • Bulb too far from the Bridge during initial pairing
  • Maximum device limit reached on the Hue Bridge (64 lights)
  • Bulb Zigbee channel conflicting with a nearby Wi-Fi network
  • Firmware on the Bridge needs updating before it accepts newer bulbs

How to Fix It

  1. Factory reset the bulb using the power switch

With the bulb powered on, flip the wall switch off and on 6 times (approximately 1 second off, 1 second on per cycle). On the 6th on, the bulb will blink to confirm the reset. It is now unpaired and ready to add.

  2. Pair within 1 metre of the Bridge

Temporarily move a lamp with the new bulb next to the Hue Bridge for the initial pairing. Once paired, you can move it to its final location.

  3. Add by serial number

Hue app → Settings → Lights → Add Light → Search → if not found → Add Serial Number. Enter the 6-digit serial printed on the bulb. This bypasses the Zigbee discovery scan.

  4. Update the Hue Bridge firmware

Hue app → Settings → Software Update → Update All. New bulb models require the Bridge to have current firmware before they can be paired.

  5. Check the Bridge device limit

A single Hue Bridge supports up to 64 lights and 63 accessories. If you are at the limit, you need a second Bridge. Go to Settings → Lights to count your total paired devices.

When to Call a Professional

Pairing failures are always software or range related. No hardware service is required — a factory reset and close-range pairing resolves almost every case.

Frequently Asked Questions

Hue app says 'Light not found' during setup — what does it mean?

The Bridge cannot find the bulb via Zigbee scan. Ensure the bulb has power, is within 1 metre of the Bridge, and has been factory reset if previously paired.

Can I use a Philips Hue bulb without a Bridge?

Hue Bluetooth bulbs (marked with a Bluetooth icon) work without a Bridge within Bluetooth range. Hue Zigbee-only bulbs require a Hue Bridge for all functionality including remote access and automations.

Hue bulb was paired to an old Bridge — how do I move it to a new one?

The bulb stores the pairing in its own memory. Factory reset the bulb first (6× power cycle), then add it to the new Bridge. Without a reset, the bulb will refuse to pair to a different Bridge.
