E760
Navien Tankless Water Heater
Severity: ModerateWhat it means
Navien E760 means the front display panel and the main control board (PCB) have stopped talking to each other.
The most common cause is the ribbon/connector between them working loose — especially after the front cover has been off for maintenance — or condensation getting into a connector.
It can also be a damaged cable or a failed board on either end.
The unit can't run normally until the two halves are communicating again.
Affected Models
- Navien NPE-180A, NPE-210A, NPE-240A (Classic)
- Navien NPE-180S, NPE-210S, NPE-240S
- Navien NPE-2 series
- Navien NCB-E combi-boilers
- Navien NPN series
Common Causes
- Ribbon cable or connector between the display and the PCB not fully seated
- Front cover not latched down properly after maintenance, leaving the connector strained
- Condensation or corrosion on a connector pin
- Ribbon cable pinched or damaged
- Front display board failed
- Main control board (PCB) failed
How to Fix It
-
Power-cycle from the breaker.
Don't just use the on/off button — flip the dedicated breaker off, wait 30 seconds, flip it back on.
A full power-down sometimes re-establishes the link.
If E760 is back as soon as it powers up, it's a hardware connection. -
Reseat the display connector.
Breaker off.
Open the front cover and find the cable running from the back of the display to the control board.
Unplug it at both ends, check for bent pins or green corrosion, and push each connector firmly back home.
Make sure the cable isn't pinched when you close up. -
Close the cover properly.
The front panel has to seat squarely and latch fully — a cover that's slightly off can tension the display cable just enough to break the connection intermittently.
Confirm every screw/clip is engaged and the panel sits flush. -
Look for moisture intrusion.
If a connector pin is corroded or there's condensation around the board, something is letting damp in — a leak above, a missing grommet, the cover seal.
Dry it out, fix the moisture source, and clean the contacts.
A connector that keeps corroding will keep throwing E760. -
If reseating doesn't hold, a board has failed.
Cable reseated, cover latched, contacts clean, and E760 still comes back — then the display board or the PCB is faulty.
Both are service-tech replacements; have your model and serial number ready when you call Navien.
