5E

Samsung Microwave

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Samsung microwave 5E means the humidity or steam sensor has detected a fault or an out-of-range reading. Unplug for 60 seconds to reset. If 5E returns, the humidity sensor or its wiring needs inspection.

Affected Models

  • Samsung Over-the-Range Microwave
  • Samsung SMH Series
  • Samsung ME Series
  • Samsung MS Series Countertop

Common Causes

  • Humidity sensor reading outside the expected range — moisture on the sensor
  • Humidity sensor connector loose or corroded
  • Failed humidity sensor
  • Control board fault causing incorrect sensor reading

How to Fix It

  1. Unplug for 60 seconds and retry.

5E caused by a momentary moisture reading or a power fluctuation clears with a power reset. If the error does not return after reset, no further action is needed.

  2. Run the microwave empty for 1-2 minutes to dry the cavity.

Excess moisture inside the microwave cavity can cause the humidity sensor to read out of range. With no 5E error active, run the microwave on low power with the cavity empty for 60-90 seconds. This evaporates any condensation in the cavity and around the sensor.

  3. Contact Samsung service if 5E persists.

A persistent 5E after drying and resetting indicates the humidity sensor has failed. Samsung service (1-800-726-7864) can arrange a repair visit. For microwaves under 1 year old, the repair is covered under the standard warranty.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the humidity sensor do in a Samsung microwave?

The humidity sensor detects steam released by food as it cooks. Samsung's Sensor Cook feature uses this data to automatically adjust cooking time — it detects when enough steam has been produced to indicate the food is cooked and stops the microwave accordingly. A faulty sensor disables Sensor Cook but does not affect manual cooking modes.

Can I still use my Samsung microwave with the 5E error?

When 5E is active, the microwave locks out all operations. After a power reset that clears the error, the microwave operates normally for manual cooking modes. Sensor Cook and Auto Cook functions may be unreliable if the humidity sensor is degraded.
